Aerosol Therapy for the lower airways  [ Return towards  Overview about Aerosol Therapy  ]

Inhalation therapy, which allows large amounts of drug to deposit on the target organ, is widely used in treating local disorders of the lower airway. Being non-invasive and easy to use, it is the method of choice in treating asthma, bronchopulmonary disorders in general and cystic fibrosis.

Advantages

The main advantage of topical treatment, which only involves the part to be treated, so no drug is assimilated systemically by the organ, is that it has no side effects that can cause undesirable reactions or deprive the target organ of the correct drug intake.

The efficacy

The efficacy of the drug prescribed by the doctor is due to the size of the atomised particles, which must measure 1-5 microns (one micron equals one millionth of a metre, just over a hundredth of the diameter of a hair) if they are to deposit in the peripheral area of the respiratory tree. The atomised drug goes straight to the affected area, unmodified and at the correct concentration.

How to get a good result

The nebulizer is the most important component as it forms the atomised particles, the size of which is fundamental in achieving the best therapeutic result.

The mask is also an element of great important for the efficacy of the treatment.
