The Medical Equipment activity of the Air Liquide group originally consisted of 3 companies: Taema in France, Electrocare in India and Markos Mefar in Italy. On May, 1st 2009, this activity became Air Liquide Medical Systems. The creation of this new brand symbolizes the common momentum of the three firms which already share the same strategy and a common organization.

Air Liquide Medical Systems France (formerly Taema) was created in 1989. It embodied the willingness of the Air Liquide group to consolidate its respiratory assistance equipment businesses in order to strengthen its world leadership in the supply of industrial and medical gases. The company first developed and produced equipments for the distribution and use of medical gases in hospitals, then progressively extended its activities to respiratory assistance equipment, starting with ventilators for emergency medicine, then for homecare, intensive care and anesthesia.

Air Liquide Medical Systems Italy (formerly Markos Mefar) results from the merge of Markos and Mefar, famous Italian companies, acquired respectively in 1996 and 2000, by Air Liquide Healthcare Italy. Since 1970, its efforts in R&D and its expertise in the respiratory field have established the company as the Italian leader in inhalation therapy. The devices developed are dedicated to the treatment of pathologies affecting the pulmonary apparatus and the upper respiratory airways: aerosoltherapy units and nebulizers along with a special range of patient-interfaces.

In 2008, Air Liquide acquires, via its medical equipment business unit, Electrocare Systems and Services, an Indian company specialized in medical equipment for respiratory care, which will become Air Liquide Medical Systems India on May, 1st 2009. Established in 1981 and based in Chennai (Madras), in the south of India, the firm manufactures respirators for intensive care and anesthesia, as well as medical air generators. It also provides after-sales service and maintenance for all its products through a network established all over India.

Thanks to the know-how and expertise of its French, Italian and Indian entities, Air Liquide Medical Systems is the only manufacturer to offer a full range of respiratory assistance equipment.
